How to learn to read before entering elementary school (SD) can affect the reading achievement of children in the future? Dolores Durkin is the researcher who first explore the issue in 1958-1964 and held a variety of studies to investigate them. What conclusions can be drawn from the study for 6 years?
1. Children who can read early on was always able to outperform reading ability of children who are late, up to the level of secondary school (SMP).
2. The ability to read early on was not related to IQ, but is closely connected with the atmosphere of home and family. Children who can read early on turned out to come from families who have attention and extra effort in helping them learn to read.
3. The ability to read early is also not related to socio-economic conditions. Children who can read early on turned out to have parents who want to take the time to reading activities with their children, although socio-economic backgrounds were different.
Durkin also found that children who begin learning to read since the age of 3-4 years, it has always outperformed the other children who begin learning to read since the age of 5-6 years. They can even continue to excel until the span of 8 years.
